Andrew Widdowson (CS '05)

I'm a longtime volunteer at Carnegie Mellon. As of July 2020, I'm a member of the CMU Alumni Association Board. When I'm in Silicon Valley, you can find me at CMU SV 19-1006, where I hold student office hours, and give career talks.

In addition to being an alumnus of CMU, I am a proud alum of WRCT, the campus broadcast radio station. With countless others, we've put together an endowment known as the WRCT Forever Fund.

In my "day job" at Google (since 2007), I am the lead for engineering culture in the Site Reliability Engineering division, and am on the elite team that maintains the reliability of Google's inner systems during major outages. I worked on Google Search for over a decade, and have experience in creating large anomaly detection systems that fight robots attacking the company. Since 2014 I've also spent time doing outreach and education within Google, training other engineers on how large scale production systems work. I wrote a chapter in the O'Reilly book, "Site Reliability Engineering: How Google Runs Production Systems."
