98-165: Gimme Indie Rock! The History and Culture of Indie Music

I will be teaching a StuCo course on the origins and history of indie rock in Fall 2011. The purpose of this Web page is to post the syllabus-in-progress
as I develop it, so that you have a clearer idea of what we're going to do during the semester. Possibly in the future I will add some additional information,
such as some writing assignments, links to relevant pages, and (possibly) exceptional student projects (given the appropriate permissions) so that people from outside of
the University community have some idea of what goes on in this class.
This course will be run and maintained through CMU's Blackboard system; I find it easier to run than
it is to code and upload HTML, and it allows for other things such as computation of grades and easy distribution of the readings and the assignments.
You should know that the syllabus and the schedule are tentative and will be periodically updated: I am mainly trying to streamline the course and reduce the
average weekly workload (in particular, I am aiming for fewer mandatory reading assignments and slightly less required listening, yet still while retaining the flavor
and themes of the course).
If You Are On The Waitlist: If you really want to be in the class, and are on the waitlist, please let me know. From four semesters of StuCo experience, I know
that around the first week of class, the roster tends to get considerably smaller as people realize they have enough "real" classes that they don't need a StuCo anymore.
If you hold on until then, and attend class every week, there should be a good probability that you'll get into the class.
