Preparation for Speaker Prof. Gianni
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is basically when computer systems or machines are built to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. This includes things like learning from data, recognizing speech, making decisions, and solving problems on their own.
There are many different sub-fields, but three major ones are Machine Learning (where systems learn from data without being explicitly programmed), Natural Language Processing or NLP (which allows computers to understand and generate human language), and Computer Vision (where AI interprets and understands visual information from the real world).
Even though the concepts have been around for decades, it is booming right now mainly because of three things. First, there is a massive increase in computing power, especially with modern GPUs. Second, we have an insane amount of data available on the internet to train these models. Finally, there have been huge breakthroughs in algorithms, particularly with deep learning, making AI a lot more capable and efficient.
Three major application sectors are manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics.
In manufacturing, robots are used because they can handle repetitive and dangerous assembly line tasks perfectly without getting tired. In healthcare, surgical robots are employed because they offer insane precision for complex, minimally invasive surgeries. In logistics, like Amazon warehouses, robots are used to sort and move packages efficiently to speed up supply chains and reduce human labor costs.
If a wheeled robot is doing 24/7 surveillance in a massive place like the Mall of Qatar, it would face a few major challenges:
It needs to continuously charge itself or swap batteries autonomously without leaving areas unmonitored for too long.
The mall is constantly changing with people walking around, wet floors, or moved kiosks, so the robot needs to avoid obstacles safely.
It needs to process and upload high-quality camera feeds in real-time across a massive WiFi network that might have dead zones.
