Life and Debt, a film by Stephanie Black
With excerpts from the award-winning non-fiction text "A Small Place" by
Jamaica Kincaid, Life and Debt tells the stories of individual Jamaicans
whose strategies for survival and parameters of day-to-day existence are
determined by the U.S. and other foreign economic agendas. Traditional
documentary and stylized narrative exhibit the complexities of
international lending, structural adjustment policies, and free trade in
the context of the day-to-day realities of the people whose lives they
impact.

WITNESS: Behind the Labels April 30, 6:30pm, Porter Hall 100
Behind the Labels: Garment Workers on U.S. Saipan (2001)
Lured by false promises and driven by desperation, thousands of Chinese and Filipina women pay high fees to work in garment factories on the pacific island of Saipan - the only U.S. territory exempt from labor and immigration laws. The clothing they sew, bearing the "Made in the USA" label, is shipped duty and quota-free to the U.S for sale by The GAP, J. Crew, Polo and other retailers. Powerful hidden camera footage, along with the garment workers` personal stories, offers a rare and unforgettable glimpse into indentured labor and the workings of the global sweatshop-where 14 hour shifts, payless paydays and lock-downs are routine. BEHIND THE LABELS takes the story from the factory floor to the streets, where protesters worldwide wage an ongoing battle against globalization. Behind the Labels was produced and directed for WITNESS and Oxygen by two-time Emmy Award nominated producer Tia Lessin. http://www.witness.org. (Running Time: 45 minutes)
Code of Conduct
Carnegie Mellon may soon adopt a strong code of conduct, which will enact policy such that our University specifies that the companies it does business with will abide by certain standards in labor practices. Included in these standards are full public disclosure, the right to organize, protection for women and children workers, a living wage, and environmental responsibility.
Stay tuned for an update on this process. Hopefully soon the code of conduct and factory locations of CMU's licencees will be on the web.
The president's council is set to decide on the code of conduct on
April 12. Stay tuned.
