Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who are you?

We're Scotch 'n' Soda Theatre. We're a student-run theatre group here at Carnegie Mellon University - and that means we are responsible for every last detail of our shows. From directing to hanging lighting to acting, painting, and even writing, there's a student in every position of every show.

Q: I'm a (fill in the blank) major. Can I still participate?
Q: I'm a grad student. Can I join too?

It doesn't matter if you're Computer Science, Art, Drama, Music, Physics, English, or anything else in the book - we'll welcome you with open arms. We also welcome graduate students - this organization is open to anyone in the university. However, Drama and Music students should check with their advisor, acting coach or voice teacher before auditioning for a major production. Sometimes, your department may require you to get special permission before participating in an outside production.

Q: I'm a part-time student, staff member, or someone otherwise affiliated with the University. Can I participate?

Scotch 'n' Soda is funded by Student Senate and by money from the Student Activities Fees collected from all full-time students each year. Thus, if you have not yet paid the Activities Fee in the current semester, you are not eligible to participate in SnS events. Once you have arranged to pay the fee, you will be welcomed with open arms into any and all SnS productions. If this applies to you, please contact a board member for further information - we can help you talk to the appropriate people.

Q: Are you affiliated with Drama or Music?

Officially, Scotch 'n' Soda is an independent theatre organization here on campus. We're not affiliated with any department - and in fact, our members encompass almost every major on campus. SnS *was* founded by a trio of drama majors, but has since grown into its own entity. However, both Drama and Music have been very kind in assisting us and lending us equipment or materials at various stages in the game, and we thank them for that wholeheartedly.

Q: How do I get involved?

In the beginning of the year, you've got tons of options. Meet us at the Activities Fair in September. Come to our Barbecue. Most importantly, come to a general meeting! These are wacky, fun-filled events where the Board fills the rest of the membership in on upcoming auditions, open staff positions, social events, and other juicy tidbits! Later on, watch the website's News & Auditions area for the latest information, or watch our bboards.

Q: How much time does SnS take from my schedule?

As much as you want it to take. If you just want a quick theatre fix, with low commitment, try coming to a build session in the "Dungeon", our scene shop, or going to a No Parking Players Improv Workshop. If you're looking for a little bit more responsibility, talk to some of our tech staffers about available positions. Directing, acting, and the major technical staff positions all require a substantial time commitment, which varies depending on your position. We try our best to work around everyone's schedules, and we recognize that academics must come first. However, most people find it so addicting that they don't want to leave... ;)

Q: Where the heck is the "Dungeon?"

The Dungeon - Scotch 'n' Soda's not-so-secret scene shop - is located in the basement of Margaret Morrison. Directions can be found here.
