Anderson, John, R.

My primary interest is the modeling of complex cognitive processes within the ACT theory. The ACT theory models human cognition as an action-driven production system operating on a declarative memory. Within the ACT theory, we have been working on detailed cognitive simulation models of human memory, problem solving, skill acquisition, strategy selection, concept acquisition, working memory limitations, and visual attention.

Behrmann, Marlene

Marlene studies a variety of visual phenomena in both unimpaired and brain-damaged individuals with visual agnosia (occipito-temporal lesions) and hemispatial neglect (occipito-parietal lesions). She is interested in the different brain regions that underlie visual processing.

Clark, Magaret S.

Peggy is primarily interested in close relationships and emotion. She is currently involved in two large-scale studies. The first study, which is currently ongoing, examines the changes in couples' behavior and relationship satisfaction that occur after marriage and the role their stable relationship orientations play in dertermining these changes. The second study, which will begin in the fall, will examine whether marital quality influences physical health.

Cohen, Sheldon

Much of his work focuses on the possibility that our psychological states and traits may influence our immune systems in a manner that might alter out bodies'abilities to fight off infectious disease. The core of this work is the identification of the behavior and biological pathways that can account for relations between psychosocial factors and susceptibility to infectious illness. However, a numberof projects focus more generally at the roles of stress, social support, socialstatus, and personality in behavioral, immune and endocrine response.

Helgeson, Vicki S.

One aspect of my work examines how the way men and women are socialized might influence their health. In particular, I am interested in the effects of two personality characteristics; unmitigated agency (focus on self to exclusion of others) and unmitigated communion (focus on others to exclusion of self). I also am interested in adjustment to chronic illness. I am looking at the role of cognitive distortions on adjustment to heart disease and have developed two kinds of support interventions to facilitate adjustment to breast cancer.

Klahr, David

David's research focuses on (1) discovering what children know and (2) explaining how they came to know it. He has explored these processes in several domains including scientific reasoning, number concepts, and problem solving skills. Recently, Klahr has been working on a project that connects basic research with instructional practices in order to improve elementary science education.

Lovett, Marsha

Marsha's research focuses on how people learn to solve problems. Two particular questions motivating her work are: How do people learn to choose appropriate problem-solving strategies? And, how can solving certain problems improve people's ability to transfer what they have learned to new situations? She has addressed these questions through laboratory research, computational modeling, and classroom studies.
