Activities Committee
The Activities Committee plans and organizes group activities for staff of Carnegie Mellon. We will make available discounts for group activities, as well as inform the community of other events of interest. This includes, but is not limited to: symphony shows, plays, and sporting events.

We plan on meeting monthly to discuss the upcoming activities that we can plan and organize. We will coordinate with other committees such as, PEAA, Staff Recognition, Staff Picnic, Communications, etc., to help in any way to communicate an activity. members updated 10/01/2002

Benefits Committee
This committee researches and discusses specific benefits included in the Carnegie Mellon (CM) staff benefits package. Usually these issues, questions, or calls for action regarding benefits are presented to the committee by staff members. Sometimes the Faculty Affairs Committee of the Faculty Senate or the CM Department of Human Resources will present issues/proposals to the Staff Council Benefits Committee regarding certain benefits. When it has been decided that action should be taken by Staff Council regarding a benefit, the committee will present a proposal to Staff Council for a vote by representatives.

Two representatives of the benefits committee serve on the University Health Care Task Force. This task force is composed of two staff, two faculty, the head of Human Resources and the Director of the Benefits Office. Proposals generated by the committee are frequently presented to the Staff Council Benefits Committee and the Faculty Affairs Committee for review and suggestions prior to presentation of the proposal to the university administration. members updated 10/14/2002

Communications Committee
The Communications Committee provides vehicles and venues to communicate staff council and Carnegie Mellon staff ideas, concerns and recognition to the entire Carnegie Mellon community.

Some of our major projects include writing/editing the "Staff Council on the Job" (formerly known as "Not for Staff Only") column for the FOCUS (a publication that is issued several times a year to staff and faculty). The column generally focuses on the issues that concern Carnegie Mellon staff or Staff Council and often highlights various staff. It serves not only as a forum for idea exchange but also as a place to post general information that is helpful to staff.

Another major project is coordinating the Annual "President's Address to Staff". The committee solicits questions for the President from all staff. The questions are compiled into categories and submitted to the President for him to answer at the event.

The Communications Committee is also responsible for preparing the Staff Council Annual Report in the Spring. The report highlights what Staff Council has accomplished during the year.

In addition, we are working closely with the Staff Council Rewards and Recognition Committee to improve communications regarding staff achievements and positive ways in which staff are contributing.

Lastly, the committee chair is maintaining the Staff Oracle Support (SOS) mentor list & email alert list.

It´s a fun committee and you end up having a good feeling after the drive is completed knowing that you helped others to have a joyous holiday. members updated 10/14/2002

Grievance Committee
The Grievance Committee was created five years ago to address concerns elicited by the Women's Issues Subcommittee on the grievance process at Carnegie Mellon. Based upon those expressed concerns, the goals of the grievance committee are:

  1. To support and accompany staff who are investigating and participating in the grievance process at Carnegie Mellon.
  2. To develop a pool of knowledgeable staff for the purpose of communicating with the campus community.
  3. To publicize the obscure fact that an alternate ombudsman can be named in the process if a perceived conflict of interest exists with the University Ombudsman.
  4. To establish a follow-up to the grievance procedure to verify that there are no negative repercussions directed toward the grievant as a result of having filed a grievance.

In addition, through PEAA, the Committee sells Entertainment Books and has hosted book fairs.

Rewards and Recognition Committee (R&R)
The purpose of the Rewards and Recognition Committee is to reward and recognize the staff for their achievements and contributions to Carnegie Mellon.

The parklet near Doherty Hall, Scotty's Corner, was completed in 1999 to honor all staff.

The R&R Committee prepares and presents the staff service awards during the reception of the Andy Awards ceremony. Staff with 5, 10, 15, 20 etc. years of service are rewarded with a service certificate that is signed by the President and the Staff Council Chair. Special folders are presented to staff having 25 or more years of service. Plaques are presented during the Andy Award ceremony to staff attaining 40 or more years of service.

Another form of recognition is the Staff Picnic planned through the President's office with the aid of the R&R Committee where all staff are invited to share a delicious buffet, music, and entertainment. Remarks of welcome and appreciation are presented by the President and/or the Provost.

For newly hired staff, the committee sends "Welcome to Carnegie Mellon University" cards that are signed by the Staff Council Chair. We also recognize deceased staff through a memorial contribution donated to the library to purchase a book in their memory. A plaque is placed in the book with the name of the deceased in appreciation for her/his contributions and service to the university.

The R&R Committee meets the first Tuesday of each month, from 12-1. members updated 10/14/2002
